Brett Hollis exploits the argument of high brow versus low brow art. Playing with the expectations of what is concept driven and what is just absurdity. The titles are an important accomplice and act as an inside joke in which the viewer is desperate to make sense of. The executions are visceral and spontaneous which lend themselves to his sporadic choice of subject matter. A vibrant and humorous cartoon language is used to lure you in until you soon realize there is a darker juxtaposed aspect to the work. He tends to stick with more approachable synthetic based mediums such as acrylic, sharpies, spray paints pen and even computer coloring, this use of materials help reinforce the argument of low and high brow art. To push this protagonist standpoint even more he chooses to never pre sketch but act on pure impulse. Instead the final works displayed have gone through a painstaking editing process from which they are chosen from a sometimes substantial body.
